Why Gourmets Can Get a Boost With Plant Lights

September 2, 2015 By GrowHobby Leave a Comment

Anyone who loves cooking knows that fresh herbs can make or break a dish. The problem is finding fresh herbs and forking over the cash required. It’s possible to bypass the grocery store year-round for herbs when simple plant lights are used to foster an indoor herb garden.

Why Create an Herb Garden?

Herbs such as cilantro, rosemary and thyme add incredible flavor to foods that their dried counterparts just can’t compete with. Fresh indoor herb gardens grown using plant lights can provide a steady stream of these vital cooking ingredients without requiring costly trips to the store from a single sprig here and there. For those who do a lot of home cooking or just prefer the freshest ingredients when they do, nothing beats an at-home herb garden. Plant lights just make it feasible to keep these gardens growing year-round no matter what conditions are like outside.

What’s Needed to Get Started

While some gardeners go above and beyond for their herb gardens, all that’s really needed to start growing beyond the plants is a special light that enables growing inside. Plant lights are meant to provide sunlight-quality nourishment to plants without the need for placing them outdoors. To really get going with this tasty hobby all that’s needed is:

  • A space – A tray or two of fresh herbs doesn’t take up much room. A small table in corner, for example, can serve this purpose well. Just create an elevated flat surface space and ensure there’s enough room for an overhead light.
  • The lights – Some of the easiest and most effective plant lights to use for this purpose are basic screw-in bulb designs. That means just about any socketed light source can work to power the bulbs. When selecting the bulbs look for LED designs that offer cooler lighting while saving money due to their low power use and extended lifespan.
  • The plants – Common household herbs to consider include rosemary, cilantro, parsley, sage and thyme. Consider the fresh herbs that are used most in personal dishes and go from there. It’s OK to start out small and add on later. Keep in mind that plant lights enable growing year round so there’s no need to worry about a growing season.

Using plant lights to create an indoor herb garden is an excellent way to keep these important ingredients always at hand. There’s no reason to pay more at the grocery store or settle for dried herbs and spices when it is so simple to have access to fresh herbs at home all the time.
